iVolunteerPH 2021 Hackathon

Posted on |

Hello! It’s been a while, again just sharing my ideas and hackathon experience with iVolunteer’s Tara! Code Tayo! Hackathon. Unfortunately, we lose but I learned new things as I’m doing our presentation. iVolunteer’s Tara! Code Tayo! Hackathon is a virtual hackathon for 2 days (April 24 and 25, 2021) hosted by iVolunteer Philippines. To start with I like to congratulate iVolunteer Philippines headed by Bel Padlan, Jb Tan, and the rest of the volunteers and panels for a successful event. I want to thank as well our point of contact (POC) Mark Badiola and and Danielle Najos for helping us out. Congrats also to the winners and to all co-hackers who joined the event. Without further ado, let’s start with the Tara! Code Tayo! Hackathon.

The challenge is “How can we engage more Filipinos to volunteer and make volunteering more meaningful through online social features?”. The mechanics, is you need to choose in their 4 categories:

  1. Make volunteering “social”
  2. Attendance validation
  3. Gamification
  4. and Open Idea

We chose category 4 Open Idea as we want to solve all of the problems in all categories and present new ideas. I team up with my wife Amah Galon. The problem we are trying to solve is as follows:

  1. Costly and timely search for volunteer events that lead to lesser engagements and participation.
  2. Time-consuming and inaccurate attendance data due to the manual process.
  3. Lack of challenge, motivation & fun.

Commonly when we present problems and solutions we just use bullets and numbering. We tried a new way of presenting problems and solutions using the Kano Model. Kano model just means prioritize features/functionalities based on categories i.e. basic (must have), satisfiers (performance), and excitement that will satisfy, encourage and even excite the stakeholders and volunteers specially. It really fits to the way we present. Below are the solutions to our problem and demo.

Kano Model Basic (must have)

Demo 1: Proximity Search thru Location

Kano Model Satisfiers (Performance)

Demo 2: Automated attendance/task tracking and on the fly generation of certificates.

Kano Model Excitement

Demo 3: Friendly competition thru teams or volunteering together. With Referrals (making volunteer as recruiter).

Hopefully it gives you new ideas and can help you in your projects.

Lastly, special thanks to my wife Amah Galon for the support all through out of the event, I think I owe her a date night ; and special thanks to Amahri and Zeev.
